Jay Hoskins learned carpentry from his father and together they built houses in northern Illinois communities. Using income from his carpentry skills, Hoskins paid his way through college and subsequently launched a successful career in industrial automation and computer technology. Throughout four decades of a high-paced professional life in technology, woodworking grew increasingly significant, offering a hands-on, unhurried contrast to the digital world.
A hybrid woodworker, Hoskins uses both machines and hand tools to create fine furniture, functional objects and decorative items. He uses machines, such as table saws and jointers, to prepare the lumber to size; and uses hand tools, such as planes and chisels, to join and finish his pieces. Many pieces use contrasting and highly figured wood, sometimes incorporating handworked veneers. Hoskins uses a variety of wood and his favorite species is cherry. “I love the way it develops a deep, rich color as it ages.” Visually and tactilely engaging, Hoskins’ elegant works appeal to both modern and traditional sensibilities. Influenced by mission and contemporary styles, Hoskins’ work is also inspired by the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and David J. Marks. While a primary interest is building fine furniture for homes, his portfolio also includes many smaller functional and decorative pieces of wood art, such as chests, boxes, and bowls. |
